Stare into fashion’s crystal ball with Monument

The magazine uproots a futuristic past.

Slowly, but surely, we are starting to awaken from the current hyped-up fashion industry, moving into alternative outlooks on our relation to garments. One of the visionaries to that approach is Monument—both a fanzine and magazine brought to life by stylist Mary-Lou Berkulin and graphic designer Karen van de Kraats. Fascinated with forgotten turn-of-the-century “Dutch Wave” designers, Monument aspires to reflect upon the current state of the industry while looking for inspiration in the late nineties and early noughties.

Next week, January 16, they will release their second issue, this time focusing on the fashion design duo Keupr/van Bentm, active between 1997 and 2001. The monumental piece will be a collection of images, quotes and articles from the archive, combined with new additions, such as a long-read by Laura Gardner, pictures of the items from the duo’s depot, and a new fashion series shot by Roos Quakernaat. It’s time to rise from your slumber and get awe-struck by a futuristic past.
