A kaleidoscopic synthesis of pop, folklore, and subversion
Cain Culto is building his own altar on occulto 001 — out today. A kaleidoscopic synthesis of pop, folklore, and subversion, his latest EP sees the Kentucky-Latin art-pop visionary threading together bluegrass twang, Latin-pop sensuality, and glitch-laced electronics. From the trance-like shimmer of “colita de rana” to the spellbound urgency of “témeme”, Culto’s voice strikes through like an invocation. There’s something ritualistic in his approach — an insistence that the personal and the political, the sacred and the profane, can breathe within the same exhale.
Working alongside producer Cary Singer (who you’d recognise from the likes of Sam Austins, Big Sean, Dominic Fike, and Clairo), Culto’s six-track project feels both polished and primal. It morphs from a dance-floor confession to a whispered prayer to a full-throated scream. But perhaps the most striking element of occulto 001 is its world-building. Culto grows into an architect of his own mythology, born of diasporic identity, queer resilience, and radical self-belief.
