Some tracks never really leave the room, or our memories: they just wait for the right person to take inspiration from them and bring them back louder. Brazilian producer Mochakk just did that with his new official remix of Nina Simone’s “See-Line Woman”. The Brazilian artist, born Pedro Maia, has spent the past few years building a reputation for emotionally-charged, rhythm-heavy productions that pull from far beyond the usual electronic canon.
The remix lands as part of Verve Records’ wider effort honouring Nina Simone’s catalogue by inviting artists across genres to be inspired by her work, not by replacing its meaning, but by revealing how naturally it still resonates inside today’s club culture and beyond.
Originally released in 1964 on Broadway-Blues-Ballads, “See-Line Woman” stands as one of Nina Simone’s most rhythmically distinctive recordings. Inspired by a traditional folk song rooted in African American oral history, the track tells the story of a woman who moves through the streets adorned and deliberate, a figure who is both desired and observed, but on her own terms, moving through public space with an almost ritualistic repetition. Through this cyclical structure, call-and-response vocals, and layered percussion, Simone renders the narrative in a hypnotic, almost trance-like way.
Over the decades, the song has become one of Simone’s most enduring works, not only because of its hypnotic groove but because it captures the emotional tension that defined much of her music. Long before dance music embraced looping minimalism, Simone was already creating something deeply cyclical and percussive, making “See-Line Woman” feel unexpectedly timeless in today’s club landscape. Mochakk’s remix stretches Simone’s commanding voice across heartbeat-like drums, sharp percussion, and a low-slung groove that feels equally suited for sunrise sets and packed warehouse basements. It’s soulful without becoming nostalgic: a balancing act Mochakk has increasingly made his signature.
Reworking Nina Simone is ambitious territory. Her voice remains untouchable in music history: spiritual, political, intimate and immense all at once. And perhaps that is exactly the challenge with reinterpreting Simone — her presence is so historically and emotionally powerful that it can never fully become someone else’s. But rather than attempting to overpower the original, Mochakk approaches it with restraint, allowing Simone’s presence to remain central while shifting the environment around her.
