No need to say you’re sorry—but you did miss gay history.
Madonna, Honey Dijon, a surprise Kylie Minogue appearance, and enough confetti to set an actual world record… Not a bad haul. Celebrating WorldPride at AFAS Live was definitely one for the books. Madonna was introduced as “a queen… and most importantly… an ally,” before launching into anthem after anthem with her longtime collaborator Stuart Price, who looked suspiciously like a remix between Kendall Roy and Saxon from The White Lotus. The Mother of Gays eventually pulled Kylie Minogue out of her sleeve, and debuted a new song before giving the stage to Honey Dijon.
Inhaling a Guinness World Record amount of confetti—literally the most confetti ever released in one minute—felt like drowning in a way that wasn’t on my bingo card. But after all, Pride is about fully immersing yourself in queer joy, so mission accomplished! Also, big shout-out to the rainbow-coloured pyrotechnics, Carly Rae Jepsen-Chappell Roan-Ariana Grande medleys, and, at one point, for blasting Beyoncé’s Who Run the World?, while the room contained the highest shirtless-men-per-square-metre ratio ever recorded. The answer was still, unequivocally, GIRLS. I’ve genuinely never seen that many men in one place without feeling remotely intimidated. Gay men really cracked the code there <3
Happy pride everyone, this weekend, today, tomorrow, and forever. Now rest up.
