So many sneakers, when all you need is a hug. Hyper Taping gives you both.

ASICS x Miyake Design Studio present their new footwear collab, inspired by injury tape and gecko’s.

New Year’s resolutions are in full swing, and we know some of you are already hunting for excuses to opt out of that class-pass subscription. We see you draping yourself in injury tape. Nice try! Won’t get you out of that gym this time. Two of Japan’s most darling brands finally join forces, and the payoff is a shoe that feels as good as it looks. ASICS x Miyake Design Studio’s Hyper Taping isn’t just inspired by wrapping tape, it colourmatches it, too. The output is a sneaker that’s akin to a tight, comforting swaddle and makes skipping the gym a much harder sell.

Galvanised by taping techniques used to aid your shrimp-shaped anatomy (did you just sit up straight?), Hyper Taping wraps your foot in elastic bands that stabilise without clutching the life out of you. And frankly, we could all use a firm embrace this cuffing season. This year is about getting the support you deserve (whether that be from your situationship or your footwear).

The outsole takes cues from gecko feet (look at their cute toe-pads on there!) delivering serious grip (catch us confidently scaling a 90-degree wall soon) and a silhouette that looks fast even when you’re late. The design is based on classic ASICS wrestling shoes, but don’t fret: the originally tight fit has been widened with a new foot-shaped mold (industry people call it a “last,” we call it mercy). Add a responsive insole and a soft sock liner, and your newly born lizard-inspired feet are ready to leap, cling, crawl, climb, do whatever geckos do.

All the colourways are bang-on; Green/Blue is bold and fresh, Black/Black is endlessly wearable, and Grey/Grey hits that cool-toned sweet spot. We imagine it styled with turquoise socks, but a fully monochrome grey sock moment would also eat. Bonus: you don’t need an injury to rock the wrapping tape the shoes match with either. Just slap it on and suddenly you look like you’ve been doing this gym stuff forever. Either way, your feet—and your outfit—win.
