Pierpaolo Piccioli has been recently appointed the brand’s new creative spearhead, and we’re curious about what’s to ensue
Inheriting the legacy of a brand like Balenciaga is like climbing a mountain in pursuit of a new peak; definitely not for the faint hearted – or at least not for the humdrum. This upcoming season, we place our full attention (and bets) on the eponymous brand’s new heir. Pierpaolo Piccioli, a master of design and Haute Couture, was appointed creative director of the Parisian House – an intrepid development in the dynasty after Demna’s long-lasting, fruitful ruling. Could this news have been prophesied? With no intention of getting sentimental, Piccioli admits to his first ever Instagram post being Cristóbal Balenciaga’s 1967 wedding ensemble. Then, his appointing may just be the much awaited resolution of a cycle. With his predecessor leaving his chair for Gucci, and Piccioli landing straight from Valentino, we’re really wondering what this musical chairs movement will bring, first and foremost, to the house of Balenciaga – is the brand going back to its root gown-y oeuvre, or will its current streetwear deportment find its confluence with something we’re not yet expecting?
Whether you want to speculate with us or remain more stoic, an era is about to commence regardless – and we suggest you tune into the subtle shifts that will soon be visible in Balenciaga’s iconic, pervasive ethos.
