The creative director seat in the G-Star office has seen a long hiatus – but the Botter pundits are ready to take over
The last months in fashion have been an unwavering rotation of creative directors appointed and reappointed to our most esteemed brands. From inside the perplexing commotion, it’s often weary to step back and grasp what the admin shifts imply for the unending list of brands going under renovation. Regardless, that’s not the case this week, as G-Star Raw’s creative direction manoeuvre restored in us some of the excitement endemic to change – real, tangible change.
Lisi Herrebrugh and Rushemy Botter, the co-founders of Botter, have been bestowed with the heavily sought-after title of creative directors for the fan-favourite denim brand. So far, the duo have been clear-sighted and composed in their tenure at Botter, bringing “Caribbean couture” to the forefront (with a proclivity for gender neutrality as one of the brand’s focuses). Founded in 1989 by Jos van Tilburg, G-Star Raw came about under the early-day sway of edginess, having gained terrain fast in the streetwear domains (and continuing the expanse ever since). For a long time, G-Star operated under a collaboration basis rather than creative monopoly, and this grand switch signifies the first time since 2018 the denim adepts appoint leading creative directors. We’re curious to see how the baton will be picked up in the brand’s relay race, and what the change will mean for one of Glamcult’s favourite collaborators – and Amsterdam’s heartthrob-brand.
