Glamcult goes to WHOLE festival

A Queer Dreamland

This year, WHOLE festival centred its theme around the concept of Dreamscapes. This idea created a global paradigm of Queer expression, love and joy, making way for the Queer community to express their deepest desires, hopes and aspirations. As for what should be a fundamental right, began and still remains to many Queer people around the world a dream; the freedom to express identity and love without fear and persecution.

In line with this year’s theme, Glamcult decided to take a deeper dive into the nuances and similarities of the dreams of the global Queer community. Captured by Charlotte Hingley and Magdalena Roe, they spoke with some of WHOLE’s stunning attendees and talented collectives to capture a magnificent tapestry of manifestations, fantasies, illusions and wishes. Welcome to our courtside.

PXSSY PALACE

Nadine (they/them)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Honestly, as much as I love nightlife and it will always be the place that raised me, I’m dreaming of a slower, quieter life.

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
A recurring dream I have is about two brothers who live in a small desert town in the USA during the 80s. Both their parents die suddenly and the younger brother who is crazy smart starts killing people but the older brother doesn’t want to lose another family member, so instead of turning him in he locks him in the basement and tells everyone he was accepted into a prestigious university. I’m a fly on the wall of their life, it’s intense and I have no idea what it means but it’s that’s my mind lol.

Bollibubbles

(She/They)

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
I once had a dream I slept with a demon version of myself while also being conscious in both bodies.

Dave & Stass

(he/him) (he/him)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Throughout the entire WHOLE festival, we bore witness to a world where love was dominant, acceptance flowed, compassion thrived, awareness awakened, and a shared responsibility towards each other prevailed. That’s the world I’ve always dreamed of.

De Reünie

Hany (He/Him), Nick (He/Him), Stef (He/Him), Jack (He/Him), Jan (He/Him)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Our dream is to venture into unexplored territory, both in the physical world and metaphorically.

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
Our residents transformed into a sensational boyband, collaborating with various other iconic artists to host raves that left everyone dancing until dawn. The harmonious blend of music and togetherness was actually very cute.

Slick

Elin (She/Her), 7e (She/Her), Mari Sakurai (She/Her), Midori (She/Her)

What are your aspirations and dreams for Slick?
Slick is a space where many kinds of people can interact openly and freely. We have built it as a non-separatist space — there are cis and trans people, queer and straight people in the party — partly because of the circumstances we face in Japan, where the queer community is relatively small, and partly because our utopian dreams are of a world open to everyone.

We hope that our space can serve as the seed of a model for other structures inside and outside the dance music, art and nightlife communities in Japan and elsewhere. We also dream now of building stronger connections outside Japan together with other communities with similar goals to ours, elsewhere in Asia and the world.

Natalie

(She/Her)

What is your biggest goal in life?
I am dreaming of one day becoming the August playboy bunny cover girl…but my more realistic dream or goal is to one day to be fully dedicated to music so I could call it my full-time job.

Pim & Molly

(He/Him) (She/Her)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Pim: If I look back at myself five years ago, I would’ve never thought I’d be the person I am today. My dream for the future is to keep exploring who I am, to find myself, and to help others find out who they are or want to be. I see life as a story and I can’t wait to see what the next chapter is going to be about.

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
Molly: I was running away from something, and all of a sudden I found myself submerged in bright pink water in this crazy cartoon world. The sky was electric blue with light pink clouds, and the grass was a soft green with fluorescent pink and yellow plants and flowers dotted around tiny cute houses. I was in complete solitude and just sat there taking it all in, feeling so many emotions – calmness, relief, happiness and excitement.

Joanka & Hugh

(She/Her) (He/Him)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Joanka: Maybe I am already in my dream and it’s just the beautiful friends that I have and everything that they expose me to, we do it and break it and do it again all the time. I’m all about these simple moments.

SEAFOOD

Hao (He/Him)

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
Not long ago, there’s a good one: I found myself back in Beijing, partying with the President of the USA, Mr Biden and his wife, they were real ravers.

What are your aspirations and dreams for SEAFOOD?
My aspirations for Seafood are to continue creating spaces where individuals can break free from societal norms, where they can shed their restraints and dance with freedom. I dream of fostering a global community where art, music and culture converge to celebrate diversity.

Herrensauna

Cem (He/Him) Nicolas (He/Him)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Harvesting renewable energy from the air would be great for the future. Maybe someone could start working on that?

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
Parthenogenesis for humankind and different pasta varieties.

What are your aspirations and dreams for Herrensauna?
We are constantly expanding our musical and artistic horizon, our family is growing organically and to be honest we are happy as long as we can continue this journey. We dream of a simple family life.

Thomas & Enaitz

(He/Them) (He/Them)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Enaitz: A Queer utopia, where we all come together, feel the music, serve looks and reach ecstasy.

Lynn & Tom

(He/Him) (He/Him)

What are you currently dreaming for the future?
Lynn: My dream is to carry on building my custom design Label LYNN L YAUNG, where all my friends in my circle proudly wear my creations. I envision a thriving community of individuals expressing their unique style through my designs, and I’m excited about the possibility of making a positive impact on the fashion industry with my creativity and passion. The year has been fulfilling but I’d love to dress all of East London by the year 2024!

Albert & Andy

(They/Them) (She/Her)

What is your dream for the future?
Andy: A limitless and safe world for trans and BIPOC youth.

ANTI-MASS

Turkana (She/Her), Nsasi (They/Them), Authentically Plastic (They/Them)

Can you tell us about a wild, crazy or unusual dream you have had?
To be filthy rich, because we live in a super capitalist world.

What are your aspirations and dreams for Anti-Mass?
To curate lineups in festivals. Festivals should be open to inviting African Qeer collectives to curate lineups in order to create intentional vibes.
