In conversation with AMORE

The perfectly esoteric experimental pop artist lets us in on Top Hits, Ballads, etc., inspirations, and her very own  “hot girl music”.

AMORE’s Top Hits, Ballads, etc. came across my desk (or should I be real and just say online feed) like a gift. Flutteringly playful, the Madrid-based singer’s debut project, Top Hits, Ballads, etc., captures a particular strain of delicate intention in the shape of a “Greatest Hits” pop compilation. Tracks like the chiptuney Amore I (featuring cult producer Loukeman) and don’t mess with mr in-between deliver dreamily light electronic symphonies, all while Querio and I Gotta Feeling blossom into dance-infused pop bangers,  operating on AMORE’s ethereally breathy vocal chops. To make it short: AMORE reveals a refreshingly left-field take on Spanish experimental pop that is paired with an equally endearing and esoteric visual world. Take the music video for Querio, for instance, where we are we meet a parade of beauties donning “hot girl music” printed dress and skating around the shot in roller sneakers in perfectly quirky, choreographed fashion. Ahead of her Perfectly Imperfect cosigned gig in NYC, we caught up with AMORE to talk inspirations, collaborations, and to figure out what “hot girl music” really means once and for all.

Hi AMORE <3 Firstly, how are you today? Where do our questions find you?
I’m super happy, thank you! I’m at a little café in Brooklyn, fully in my main character moment.

You put out your debut LP earlier this year. Could you share your vision behind the project?
I’m very inspired by the legacy of Spanish music, especially from the 90s and early 2000s; artists like Julieta Venegas, Javiera Mena, Manolo García, Chambao, Santiago Motorizado… and of course icons like Madonna and Björk. I also love the minimalism of Mica Levi, and I get a lot of inspiration from watching dance pieces, too.

I saw you are making your NYC debut in about a week. Any pre-show feelings?
I’m not really sure how I feel yet… I guess super excited, and also curious to see what the venue’s like and how people will react. So far, my experience with New Yorkers has been amazing, so I have no reason to think it’ll go wrong!

Could you let us in on the idea behind your official listening party for Top Hits, Ballads, etc?
I wanted to invite people to have a slow, immersive visual experience, kind of the opposite of what we’re used to now. I felt that was the only way to really understand the aesthetic world behind the songs, to bring them into bodies and movement, take them out of abstraction, and lead them toward what I imagine.

What does “hot girl music” mean to you?
Free music! Making exactly the sound you want and owning it.

Thoughts on roller shoes?
Way harder than I expected… after filming, my neck was destroyed.

On love?
For me, it’s the base of everything. I think every topic in the world somehow comes from love, in one form or another.

Favourite recent musical find?
Naomie Klaus and Brigitte Fontaine.

Who is a band or artist that influences you that might be a little unexpected?
I’d say Ravel, especially his piano works. I love how he often composes with movement in mind; it really resonates with me.

How did your collaborations with Dinamarca come about?
It happened in 2022. I was a huge fan, and one day he just messaged me — I was coming back from university and almost lost it. We became really close right away, and he’s been part of my journey ever since. He’s like a brother to me.

What’s next?
Right now, I just want to grow musically, learn more about music, piano, and harmony. I’ve realised there’s still so much I need to learn, so I’m mainly looking for great musicians to learn from. Hit me up!!!!
