Lights, camera, action!
When you waltz into a KidSuper show, you know you’re in for a treat. The king of doing absolutely anything but a normal fashion show, Colm Dillane, sends us to the silver screen this season. Inspired by Dillane’s personal favourite film characters, AW26 OUTSIDE THE BOX delivered looks that come paired with a plot of their own.
Opening with an angsty, slightly unhinged short film written and directed by Dillane himself, starring French actor Vincent Cassel as a man slowly realising he might be trapped inside a Matrix-style simulation. A longtime fan of La Haine, the film sets the tone for the collection, asking us to question the roles of what’s real and what’s performed.
Animal print prowled onto the runway, meeting its match with leather suits, ties, collars and bags. Colourful watercolour-esque suits drifted by like hand-painted backdrops, worn by characters who felt part detective, part flashy salesman, part mysterious bird. Hands clutched faux drink props like a frame frozen in time, all the while briefcases and flip flops swung free from the opposite hand. Like a spy undercover, or a biker on the run, models made their way dressed in colourful yet somehow natural, picture-perfect costuming.
Created in collaboration with Jameson Whiskey and the iconic flip-flop brand Havaianas, the collection also saw Jameson-branded jackets and custom Kidsuper Havianas make their debut. The credits roll, the soundtrack cues, and for the grand finale: the box comes back for vengeance – slowly lowering atop of Dillane till he disappears – and we wander off into the night a little changed forever.
