Step inside the life of Martin Wong

A story with many chapters

The Stedelijk Museum presents an exploration into the world of Martin Wong. Running until April 1st, 2024, the exhibition unfolds across Wong’s lifetime, each period marked with emotional depth and a diverse array of artistic styles. Beginning in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s, the city of his upbringing, we are shown Wong’s stream-of-consciousness style poetry and his first paintings, inspired by Chinese cultural symbols. As his artistic biography continues, the journey leads us through Eureka, California, and ultimately to New York, where the majority of Wong’s iconic works were brought to life. This segment of the exhibition encapsulates the decay of New York City during the 1980s and 1990s. It serves as a poignant reflection on the challenges posed by the AIDS crisis and the dynamics of institutional power.

This exhibition is a must see, visit here to get your tickets!
