Moth metamorphosis and duels against internet evils: Yaeji releases “Pondeggi”

God blessed us with generative AI and unencumbered talent like Yaeji on today’s internet

Wistful and unassuming, Yaeji collaborated with E Wata on her newest track Pondeggi – a soft rewording of the Korean silkworm dish beondegi, relevant for Yaeji’s gradual metamorphosis into the bug throughout the music video. “Metamorphosis” can be understood as a double entendre here – her Kafka-esque transformation takes place in order to escape the evil witch, who similarly transformed into a glitch on her laptop screen, taking over her digital networks. (Imagine her hijacking your effortful Instagram curation… Ew.)

Set to the beat of the playground hand game we see in the very beginning of the song, Yaeji’s new project is downright jesting and witty, distancing itself from any self-seriousness that could spoil the fun, as per the artist’s wont. Directed by Andrew Thomas Huang, the imaginative, epileptic music video sets the tone for the season to come – which, with a little luck, is all about exuberance and lightheartedness (and catching moth wings after fighting the internet evils, maybe?).
