Double single ‘Minty // Earth’ blesses us with a bit of sunshine
Double the surprise, or should we say triple? Glamcult cover star and Odd Future graduate Earl Sweatshirt, mega east-coast rapper MIKE, and producer supercollective SURF GANG join forces on freshly released double single ‘Minty // Earth’. The news doesn’t stop here, the tracks are dropped with a new music video, the announcement of a double LP, ‘POMPEII // UTILITY’, due April 3rd, and the reveal of its imminent tour. Thirty-three (!!) tracks are expected – but today we’re able to bask in the first two.
SURF GANG’s low-temp trap bass and airy plugg synths drift with MIKE and Earl’s often-compared yet distinct flows, scratching a different itch for each. NY’s MIKE is attentive and muffled, while California’s Earl tames an off-beat murmur. But both remain unfazed – always. In true diptych style, ‘Minty’ and ‘Earth’ each paint their own universe while always making sense together. In both tracks, there’s an aching need to just chill, which is exactly what the visuals deliver. MIKE’s ‘Minty’ offers the warm hue of the Los Angeles IG filter, in which his verses bounce perfectly back to the production. In ‘Earth,’ the whole collective heads down to the shore, Earl’s mumbled but loved bars shuffle through the haze of the rocky coast.
If fool’s spring is getting to you and you’re in dire need of some light, the music video has got you. Think sun-blinding views, and gauzy sea-overlooking hill roads.
