London Faces: Lord Apex

Music as 'a journey of ego death'   Following the racing rhymes of his bottomless discography, I wouldn’t guess Lord Apex is a man of few words outside the studio. However, getting to know one of the most exciting names in the UK rap scene, his observant nature has explained a lot – for it’s his stoic front that gives rise to the textured lyricism and an abstract take on hip-hop signature to his vision.

After soaking in every second of her past two (full-length) albums, we are excited to announce the launch of her third, Powders, on her very own label Chemical X, on September 20th. Creating within the intersection of electronic experimentation and acoustic textures, Eartheater takes us on a journey of possibility. Have we already given the album a listen? We can't say (yes), but we hear from a VERY reliable source that it's a masterpiece 👀.

Radical Tracks: Introverted Bass

Bass music, leftfield bass, UK bass… Music journalists and industry professionals often have a hard time neatly fitting music on the bass-ier end of the spectrum into easily categorised boxes, and perhaps that’s a good thing? This results in a lot of today's music, which is informed by the formerly ‘strictly’ separated genres of ‘bass music’, combining instrumentation and drum patterns that hint to the past (and are nonetheless labelled in nondescript ways). With this playlist, I, therefore, ask: Do we live in a post-genre era? Should we just quit trying? Or should I just throw another misnomer in the mix? Allow me to try with introverted bass.

Miles Delfos investigates the early 1900

Coming from a small city not far from Amsterdam, Miles Delfos sees fashion as a way of projecting his interdisciplinary approach to art. With a background in branding as well as in design, he is now exploring and manifesting his design identity through his collections. Inspired by a series of photos from German photographer August Sander, his work aims to depict the early 1900s, and the way those “wore their life upon their skin”. By using contrasting elements from the photos and material manipulation through design, Delfos has created a collection that he describes as an ode to this period.

Glamcult meets Izzy Camina

The fact the world is ending is no news, but no one has quite grasped the sheer absurdity of today’s age quite like Izzy Camina. Her recent EP, ANG3L NUMB3RS, is an ode to the collective hysteria, a gently ironic exploration of new age spiritualism, and a hug to the generation that is constantly being thrown between the extremes of faith and cynicism. Weaving her sugary vocals through explosive jungle breaks and sharp-tongued lyrics, Camina's vision is piercing and cathartic in its liberation. Eager to learn more, we spoke to the artist about all things rural, her creative process, and astrology as a tool for introspection.

In conversation with the curators of Bloodsport

Unveiling a chilling exploration of the human fascination with violence and its interaction with modern technology, the group exhibition "Bloodsport" captivated audiences and artists alike in Amsterdam. Curated by the artistic duo Isabelle van Manen and Doron Beuns, known as Sodom & Gomorra, this thought-provoking display was the second edition of their joint exhibitions, showcasing the works of thirteen emerging artists from around the globe. The exhibition, held under the auspices of Pim Lamme from Semester 9, a burgeoning contemporary art agency, delved into the delicate balance between our biological vulnerability and the perceived detachment from violence facilitated by technology. In an era where graphic images of brutality inundate our screens through news outlets and social media, one cannot help but wonder about the allure of these macabre depictions. Is it a morbid curiosity, a fascination with the limits of human endurance, or something more primal that draws us in?

Crying for XIMONLEE SS'24

Silver tears drip down models' faces into the Seine as the dining boat cruises around Paris – with the city's breathtaking views falling secondary to XIMONLEE's SS24 stunning collection. A sense of drama is immediately felt through the juxtaposition of razor-sharp edges and the fluidity of barely-there airy mesh, the tension between which is elevated by the slow, sensual walks of the models as they navigate the intimate space. In tandem with unexpected tailoring, subversion of the casual and the formal, and prominent punk undertones, XIMONLEE knows how to use classical elements to his advantage. The result is an intellectually tongue-in-cheek storyline, in which rebellion hits subtly – like in the beautifully draped, see-through nude dress, gently revealing the black leather jockstrap adorned with chains and metal rings.

Amsterdam Faces: Cero Ismael

Cero Ismael is the artist wearing his heart on his sleeve, as his music is a deeply introspective exploration of tangled feelings, as well as a tight hug to anyone healing their own wounds. The title of his latest project, Eureka, comes from the Ancient Greek term that defines a lightbulb moment – a celebration of long-awaited discovery of what you have been searching for. Within this, Ismael departs from the darker, heavier tones of his earlier projects into more hopeful territories, as his ethereal honey-dew vocals swiftly glide over layered electronic productions.
